Action Against Crime - A Short History

Action Against Crime
began not as a movement or organisation but as an initiative motivated by Eben Mclaren, then Senior Superintendent in charge of the greater Johannesburg area. Eben was inspired by the Transformations video that shows what happens when churches join together and men and women commit to prayer. Cities were changed to God's Glory.

He realised as a senior police officer, that to depend on man to restore law and order to our city was futile. It would take a mighty move of God and so he reached out to the church and asked the body of Christ to pray for and support the police wherever possible.

Our meetings began in January 2000, two and a half years ago and consist of a group of committed Christians from many different denominations. We came together for the first time in the Norwood Police Station and we prayed for the police, for the country and for unity between the churches. Since then we have continued to meet at least once a month, either in a church or police station continuing to pray for the police, their protection, their families, and that God would aid them in their unbelievably difficult task of maintaining order in Johannesburg. We pray that God would expose crime and give the police a supernatural ability to discern where gangs or syndicates are operating.

We pray for and believe in revival amongst the police and that they would come to know Jesus Christ as their personal Saviour. The Alpha course was presented at the Norwood Police Station this year.

Fanie Van Vuuren, the Chairman of the Christian Police Association, is closely linked to us and is always available to present his vision of adopting a police station to the churches. He is able to guide and help us build relationships with the stations so that spiritual as well as practical assistance can be offered.

Eben McLaren has since been promoted to Director in Pretoria, but he remains in touch with us and attends whenever duty allows. He has been invited to visit Uganda next year to share what is on his heart.

We believe that God has a good plan for our country and that Jesus Christ is the hope of South Africa. Action Against Crime is but one of the many prayer initiatives in our country crying out to God to Transform our nation.

We would like to encourage churches everywhere to get involved and link up with their police stations. There are many police officers who will testify to the miraculous protection that they have known and the supernatural working of God in their lives.
